Steps 2 through 7 are the items you complete yourself, and doing them first means the sweep spends the visit on the chimney instead of hauling out your ash and telling you your wood is wet. Bring your written defect list and photos to the appointment.
Do I really need a moisture meter?
You need to know whether your wood is under 20%, and a $20 pin meter is the only way to know for certain. If you don’t own one, use the three checks in Step 6 — cracked ends, light weight and a sharp clack, and no hissing in the fire. Those confidently catch badly wet wood, which is the case that matters most. They just can’t tell you the difference between 18% and 24%, and that difference is exactly where creosote problems begin.
How often does a chimney really need sweeping?
